HealthKit Research Entitlement

This entitlement modifies how your health research app requests access to HealthKit data. Access to HealthKit data still requires user consent.

Overview

Starting in iOS 27, participants will have more granular control over how they share HealthKit data including choices to 1) limit an app’s read access to the past 30 days and 2) periodic reminders about which app has HealthKit access, with the option to revoke access at any time.

If granted, this entitlement will do two things: 1) New HealthKit permission requests will not include the option to limit historical data to 30 days and 2) the entitlement will reduce the number of reminders study participants receive.

Requirements

HealthKitResearch requires iOS 27.1 or later.

Request the entitlement

If you’d like to apply for this entitlement, you’ll need to have it assigned to your developer account. Account Holders in the Apple Developer Program can submit an entitlement request. Requests are granted per bundle ID (the app’s unique identifier), and an app update and redistribution will be required once the entitlement is granted.

In order to be eligible:

  • Your study must have approval from an Independent Ethics Committee (IEC) or Institutional Review Board (IRB), ensuring participant safety, welfare, and rights. Approval letters must be provided upon request, per App Review Guidelines Section 5.1.3 (Health and Health Research).
  • Your app must be exclusively designed to conduct health research.
  • Your app must be designed for one unique study.
